‘InFormal Setting’ is the debut album of uprising Italian pianist and composer Federico Nuti.

In addition to the leader on the piano, the band includes four of the most sought-after young Italian musicians: Jacopo Fagioli on trumpet, Francesco Panconesi on tenor saxophone, Amedeo Verniani on double-bass and Mattia Galeotti on drums: what might seem like a classic trumpet-tenor-piano-bass-drums quintet is propelled into the realms of the most cutting-edge contemporary jazz by the leader’s exceptional compositional skills and by the outstanding creative personalities of the five youngsters.

Nuti, a graduate from the renowned New England Conservatory of Boston, founded the band with the idea of exploring different possibilities, intricacies and subtleties that can occur in the context of a quintet, in search of a narrative balance between freedom and formal structure.

The word “formal” usually indicates the accordance to established forms and requirements, whereas its opposite refers to something unceremonious and spontaneous. InFormal Setting is a space where these aspects coexist in music, an open frame which unites the opposites, which shapes and support ever-changing images that pass through.

Each piece is a story on its own, resembling programmatic music, but with a lot more room for improvisation and imagination.
