International trio ARCH, formed by Luca Sguera (piano), Joe Rehmer (double bass) and Giovanni Iacovella (drums) captivates the listener by their complex interplay, expressive improvisations and fresh, playful approach to timbre. The six tracks on their self-titled debut album offer fertile ground for dialogue and experimentation in a delicate balance between composition and improvisation. “In an impenetrable dualism of synthesis and exploration, each member of the trio brings something deeply personal to the discussion. The result is a fluid and ever-shifting dialogue which moves from dense soundscapes to more ethereal moments of airiness, flirting with silence. Like the curve of an arch, the music flows in the space defined by the two pillars, which support the weight of everything above while allowing movement between them.”
"The record starts with 'Asleep at the Disco' where the instruments blend together in a cubistic pattern which combines pulsations, percussive sounds and rhythmic ostinatos that lead the listener into a surreal dream; a nightclub stuck within the locked groove of a psychedelic gamelan orchestra record."
Following the opening track, Jaw introduces further rhythmic complexity, laying the path for an angular melodic improvisation which closes with a long Morton Feldmanesque coda that reveals the sound of the huge auditorium in which the music was recorded. Eye Contact opens with a delicate unison in whose hesitations, and silences allude to chamber music leading to an expressive improv section that explores and develops the melodic content of the piece. Jenny Lind was named after a Swedish opera singer. In this track you can almost hear her warming up backstage before the curtain call. In the fifth track, Disco Dream, the trio searches to reveal form within a free improvisation which slowly solidifies as the track develops. Fishes, Still Around closes the album with a flowing lyrical immersion. Here, the piano’s slow arpeggios, create a vast acquatic soundscape while percussion and double bass reverberate in the depths.
